Scottsdale AZ is a city located in the Salt River Valley, on the north reaches of the Sonora desert, in the state of Arizona. It has the population of something over 220 000 people and is adjacent to the territory of Arizona's capital, Phoenix. It has been given its present name in 1894, after its founder Winfield Scott. The climate in the region is arid, which means winters are mild and summers very hot. Warm weather and a lot of sunshine year-round make Scottsdale a very popular touristic destination. Other than the climate, many cultural events and ever increasing offer of art galleries, nightlife activities, shopping malls and boutiques made Scottsdale a popular destination for young, rich, fashion conscious visitors. It is the third city in America for the number of AAA Five-Diamond hotels and resorts. Art and culture The city is home to over 125 art galleries and museums, one of the highest per person in America, and as such is America's center for art and also largest art market in the country. Its galleries are most famous for their western and Native American themed art, although contemporary art is becoming increasingly popular in the last couple of decades. There is a famous Scottsdale Art Festival taking place every year, which has been ranked number one such event in America by American Style Magazine in 2005. Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is held every year since 1955. Thousands of visitors gather every year to see exhibitions and competition of almost 2000 purebred Arabian and half-Arabian horses. Scottsdale Jaycees Parada del Sol. This cultural event started in 1954 and has been held every year since. It is a month-long cowboy event that starts with the Parada del Sol parade, which is the largest horse drawn parade in the world, and attracts cowboys from all across America who gather in Scottsdale to participate in activities during this manifestation. Barret-Jackson Auto Show. It is a weeklong event held every January and is truly a spectacle for all auto enthusiasts and collectors. You can find all kinds of luxury and exotic automobiles as well as historic vehicles in great condition in this Auto Show, so if you have a thing for automobiles, don't miss it. The Scottsdale Culinary Festival is held every year in April and lasts for one week. It features many culinary events city-wide, but the main and the most popular event is the so called Great Arizona Picnic, held on Scottsdale Civic Center Mall's lawn, and is a presentation of famous national and local chefs. Shopping If you like to shop, you're not going to be left empty-handed when leaving Scottsdale as there are many corporate retail outlets within the city. Some of the most famous ones are Kierland Commons in North Scottsdale and Scottsdale Fashion Square in Downtown. Nightlife The city has a rich offer of nightclubs, restaurants and bars. The majority of it is concentrated in Downtown Scottsdale. It is the most active nightlife scene in Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Major bars, restaurants and clubs are located within the walking distance of one another, providing a vibrant atmosphere during most evening.
