Key West Florida, located at the southernmost point of the continental United States, has a reputation for being a homegrown slice of Caribbean paradise. It also has a reputation as being a party town. An island little more than four miles long, Key West welcomes some 2.5 million visitors annually. 350 cruise ships drop anchor every year, with day-trippers returning to dry land to see what all the fuss is about. Meanwhile, tourists arrive by air and road from all four corners of the globe. key west floridaKey West International Airport receives flights from a limited number of U.S. airports, mostly based in Florida with a few along the Eastern Seaboard. Visitors wishing to arrive at the island in style should fly to Miami and take the Overseas Highway all the way through the keys. Despite its diminutive size, the island is home to entertainment and attractions galore, while the easy-going, friendly atmosphere makes for a more-than-pleasant vacation. Most visitors flock to Duval Street, the island’s main road, which is dotted with hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, cafés and boutique stores. It also happens to be home to more than 100 bars and pubs. More adventurous visitors can take on the ‘Duval Crawl’, a pup crawl that aims to take in every single establishment on the street. Key West is well-known for its famous residents. The island has housed noted luminaries such as Ernest Hemmingway, Tennessee Williams, Robert Frost and President Harry Truman. The homes of Hemingway and Williams are still celebrated, and can be visited. Look out for the six-toed cats lauding it around Hemingway House. Flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, it should come as no surprise that nautical history is celebrated in this part of the world. The island is home to such treats as Mel Fisher’s Maritime Museum, St. Augustine’s Pirate and Treasure Museum and the Key West Shipwreck Museum. The old lighthouse also serves as a museum, although the views on offer at the top of its 88 steps are far more impressive than its collection, which is by no means uninteresting. key west floridaOther popular attractions on the island include the Key West Museum of Art and History, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park and Key West Cemetery. The latter houses some interesting epitaphs to say the least. Most first-time visitors make time to get snapped at the monument marking the southernmost point of the island, and thus the United States. Notice how it’s not quite in the right place? After a day of strolling and sightseeing, Mallory Square is the place to be. Locals host a nightly party in the square, with tourists very much welcome. Enjoy a lively atmosphere, great conversation and beautiful sunsets before hitting the hay. Peak vacation time in Key West is considered to be November to May, when the temperature is less humid and more manageable. Subsequently, the island gets much busier around this time. Tourists wishing for something a little more low-key might want to investigate visiting during non-peak times.
