houston texasHouston, Texas, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America as the fourth largest city in the United States of America. Some 31 million visitors make their way to the city every year, each looking to make the most of the many attractions on offer. Houston is readily accessible by road from all of Texas’ major cities as well as the likes of New Orleans and Oklahoma City. Visitors traveling from further afield should plan to arrive at George Bush International Airport (IAH), located about 23 miles north of the city. The airport welcomes flights from across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well as overseas destinations including London, Paris, Dubai and Tokyo. houstonTravelers looking to make their way to the city center will need to arrange car hire or take advantage of taxi, bus and shuttle services operating out of the airport. Downtown Houston serves as the city’s major tourist hub and is home to a seemingly endless supply of hotels. That being said, with the city a popular convention town, it can be difficult to find a room so be sure to book in advance. houston texasIn terms of tourist attractions, Houston’s No. 1 destination is the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Almost all first time visitors make a beeline for the facility, which offers a historical look at the United States space program and the launch site of so many NASA missions. “Space City” offers much more for visitors to enjoy, and it’s not all to do with space shuttles. Houston is also home to a wide range of museums and galleries, many of which can be found in the Museum District. Amongst those worth visiting are the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the John C. Freeman Weather Museum, and the Bayou Bend Collection and Garden. Houston’s theater district offers the chance to see plenty of plays, musicals and Broadway shows. In fact, only New York City has more theater seats in the U.S. Family-friendly attractions include the Houston Zoo, the Downtown Aquarium, and Wet’n’Wild Splash Town. The latter is located just north of Houston. With professional baseball, (American) football, ice hockey, basketball and soccer teams located in the city, going to a game is an ideal option for all travelers. houston texasThose planning a visit in March should check out the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which ordinarily takes place at NRG Stadium. 2.2 million visitors take in the rodeo every year, making it the largest event of its kind. With some 11,000 restaurants in the city, finding good food is effortless. With a wealth of cuisine to offer, there’s something for everyone here. This is Texas though, so expect high quality steaks and BBQ food. For an easy afternoon, take a stroll along Buffalo Bayou or visit any of the city’s scenic green spaces. Stop for a coffee at Market Square Park before visiting any of the city’s mega shopping centers. Tourist season in Houston extends from April to November with high summer bringing the biggest crowds. Potential visitors should be warned though: summer in Houston is very, very hot and can be almost unbearable. A spring or early fall visit may be preferred then.
