colorado springsColorado Springs, situated at the heart of the state of Colorado, is a popular destination for tourists in search of scenic landscapes, cultural attractions and a generally easy-going pace to their vacation. Somewhere in the vicinity of two million visitors arrive in Colorado Springs every year, making it the second most visited destination in the state. Only Denver welcomes more people. Colorado Springs Airport (COS) offers a limited number of connections to U.S. cities, including Seattle, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Los Angeles and Denver. Meanwhile, Denver International Airport (DEN) – located about 70 miles away – serves up connections across the country and internationally. Motorists heading to the city should make a beeline for I-25 (north to south) or I-70 (east to west), both of which meet at Colorado Springs. Having a vehicle will prove useful if you’re looking to see the region’s epic landscapes, so air passengers may wish to arrange car rental. Tourists visiting Colorado Springs inevitably make the journey out to Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. Both destinations serve up truly remarkable scenery that’s best taken in on foot. Hiking trails, which double as mountain bike trails, offer passage through the most accessible parts of the region, with easy walking trails available for those less confident in the hiking abilities. Cheyenne Mountain State Park is another popular destination as is South Cheyenne Creek. The former houses a “secret” nuclear bunker from the Cold War amidst its beautiful landscapes, while the latter features the Seven Falls, a collection of seven beautiful waterfalls. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo can also be found in the state park. Visitors can expect to see giraffes, moose, bears, lions and elephants amongst the exhibits at America’s only mountainside zoo. Back in the city, attractions popular with tourists include the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum and the Western Museum of Mining and Industry, both of which offer a chance to delve back into the region’s history. Speaking of delving into history, Old Colorado City – once the region’s major settlement – offers visitors the chance to relive the Old West. colorado springsManitou Springs – which is not technically part of Colorado Springs – has defied the changes of time to retain a hippy-esque feel to it. Visitors making their way to the neighborhood can expect plenty of galleries, boutiques and cafés. Other attractions in the region include the U.S. Air Force Academy and the United States Olympic Training Center. Colorado Springs’ true appeal though is its surrounding landscapes. Whether you’re heading out by car, jeep, bike or bus, make sure you take the time to really soak in the grandness of what lays in front of you. Tourist season in Colorado Springs generally stretches from March to November, with the busiest period falling between June and August. As you might expect, hotel prices take a hike during these busy months, meaning travelers looking to grab a bargain should try earlier or later in the year. Some tourists opt to visit the city in the winter, although out of town ski resorts are generally preferred as accommodation options. Some hotels in the city close for the winter.
