South Bank Parkland is a popular place for both tourists and locals, and with everything it has on offer, it can get quite busy. The pools and the artificial beach is a great spot to cool off during the hot days, while the many excellent cafes and restaurants will satisfy the stomach. There is regular entertainment for children, including a ferris wheel, and also a variety of markets to wander through. Visitors will also be rewarded with fantastic views of the city skyline, as well as the views over the river. The CityCat is a fast ferry which runs along the river, and has multiple stops between Apollo Road and the University of Queensland. Popular amongst commuters, those with insider knowledge also know that it's a great (and cheap) way to see the city and get around, without paying premium prices for touristy riverboat trips. Queen Street Mall is a pedestrian area which is popular for shopping, and you can expect to find all the usual high street stores in the area, as well as high end stores and the department store David Jones. Many small pubs such as the Pig & Whistle are set up in Queen Street and serve good hearty food with cold beers while you review your latest purchases or watch people wander by. When you are in Brisbane, make the effort to go to the Australia Zoo, which is an hour's easy commute on the train towards the Sunshine Coast. Buses from the zoo come to meet the train arrivals and transfer you for free to the zoo. The zoo is the brainchild of the late conservationist and wildlife expert Steve Irwin, who also inspired millions to love and respect nature through his TV show, The Crocodile Hunter. The Irwin family are still involved at the zoo and continue to educate and fascinate visitors. You can expect close up encounters with many types of animals, including koalas, snakes and of course, the famous Australian crocs! Travellers could easily spend weeks in this incredible part of the world, and still have new places to explore. For those with more time, a trip to the Gold Coast is special, and water-babies will love the waves at Surfers Paradise. See what makes Down Under magical. Discover Australia.
